Injuries Continue to Plague Coyotes in Loss to Pioneersby Coyote Staff
The Central Valley Coyotes (3-9) traveled across the country to play in an arena where the fans have seen their home team win 23 games in a row. That winning streak was extended to 24 games as the Coyotes were defeated by the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Pioneers (10-2) 20-58.
After the Pioneers jumped out to an early 14-0 lead, the injuries began for the Coyotes. Defensive back and kickoff returner Ruschard Dodd-Masters was injured and forced to leave the game in the first quarter with an ankle injury and was just the first of several casualties the Coyotes would suffer on the night.
The Coyotes were shutout in the first quarter but answered with a pair of Joe Ayoob (18-43 214 yards 3 td’s) touchdown passes in the second quarter to John Roberson (7 rec. 103 yards, 2 td’s) and Lamonte Jones (7 rec. 61 yards, 1 td). The Pioneers held the lead at the half 24-13.
Ayoob would find Roberson again in the third quarter to cut the lead to 20-24 but that’s as close as the Coyotes would get all night. The Pioneer’s pass rush harassed Ayoob all night and eventually knocked him out of the game with an MCL knee injury early in the fourth quarter. QB Ryan O’Hara replaced Ayoob in the fourth quarter but the Pioneers defense forced the same results for the Coyotes offense as O’Hara was just 1-6 for 3 yards and one interception. They Coyotes also suffered injuries to offensive lineman Donyell Booker (LCL) and OL Brandon Jefferson (separated shoulder/stinger). Booker finished the game but Jefferson was taken to the lock room after losing strength in his right arm after falling on a loose ball in the fourth quarter.
The Pioneers offense, lead by QB Ryan Vena (17-24 for 223 yards and 4 touchdowns), kept the pressure on the Coyote defense as they outscored the Coyotes 34-7 in the second half. Vena’s favorite target on the night was Russell Athletic Offensive Player of the Game WR J.J. Outlaw who finished the night with 7 catches for 117 yards and 2 touchdowns.
The Coyotes final casualty came with 40 seconds left in the game when WR Lamonte Jones fell to the ground after being contacted by a Pioneer defensive back. Jones was taken off the field on a stretcher in a neck restraint and taken to Geisinger Wyoming Hospital for evaluation. X rays came back negative for spinal cord/neck damage to Jones and he was discharged.
The Coyotes return to Selland Arena Saturday June 27, 2009 to face division rival the Boise Burn. Kick-off is at 7:15pm and tickets are still available.
